Conventions of Psychological Thrillers

Titling - titling of the films i analysed were written over black for example Taxi Driver and Misery- and the color black connotates that the film may include sinister/evil characteristics which is common of a psychological thriller. Also both of these films titling were in the color red which connotates violence/blood/danger which are all incorporated in the film which signifies to the audience and to me that this is a convention of a psychological thriller which includes graphic displays of violence and blood e.t.c As my film incorporates violence/blood/danger i chose to use the font red to signify danger and blood and put the titling over black to signify evil/dark/sinister side of the movie.

Camera Movements - In the majority of the film the camera usually stays on the main character for the audience to be able either relate to him or to unsettle them with shots such extreme close-ups which is used in Taxi Driver for the audience to be unsettled by the extreme close-up of Travis Bickle's face. Or in the opening sequence we see a trait of the character as in Psychological thrillers the main character for example in American Psycho the audience see Patrick Bateman use extremely strong language and threaten with a bartender by describing a extremely violent attack- this connotates that Patrick Bateman will be the main character and also that we will similar moments further in the movie.

Soundtrack Confirmation

Opening sequence Soundtrack Final

I've chosen to use A B Boys Alpha(instrumental) - Cannibal Ox
I chose this for the soundtrack as ir gives off quite an eerie feel which supports the conventions of psychological thrillers much like in the taxi driver opening sequence.

Film Certificate - Final

I have chosen my film to be an 18 as it fits well with the conventions of Psychological thrillers as the majority of which i have analysed have been certified as 18. The following four films i analysed were all classed as '18'.

All of these were classed as '18' as all of them contain extremely graphic scenes of violence, sexual violence, exposure to drugs, use of offensive language.

Film Certificate

All films that i have analysed have been certified 15 or 18 so i researched what makes a film an 18 or an 15. In most of the psychological thrillers that i analysed there were many extremely graphic scenes of violence/sexual violence therefore those would be classed as an 18 but as i want my film reach a wider audience i thought about my classing my film as an 15.But by classing my film as a 15 i rule out my chances to include many conventions of Psychological thrillers in my film e.g. extremely graphic scenes of violence as seen in Taxi Driver and American Psycho - both of which i analysed.
- 15 –
Suitable only for 15 years
and over
No one younger than 15 may
see a ‘15’ film in a cinema.
No one younger than 15 may
rent or buy a ‘15’ rated
video work.
Regarding violence which is a key factor in my film BBFC state that in a 15 "Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction
of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to
be acceptable."

- Suitable only for adults
No-one younger than 18 may
see an ‘18’ film in a cinema.
No-one younger than 18 may
rent or buy an ‘18’ rated video. - As it is only suitable for adults it rules out any teenagers to view my film.

Props

Black Prada Jacket - I used this as a prop as the color black is representative of evil/sinister characteristics and indicates to the audience that Blake may be the villain of the film. Also the jacket is made by prada which is regarded as a high-class designer and this goes well with Blake's character being a CEO of a multinational company - This links to Patrick Bateman's Character in American Psycho.

Black YSL Shoes - Once again the shoe being black connotates that there may be something sinister about Blake. Also the shoes indicate to the audience that Blake may be a businessman of some sort and the shoes are designed by YSL which once again has connotations of Blake having a high-quality life. - This links to Patrick Bateman's character in American Psycho who is a CEO and lives two lives, one as a CEO and the other as a cold blooded killer.

Parker Pen - This pen was used as it links to the fact of Blake being a CEO and is ironic as Blake uses this pen to murder his first victim in the film(shown in the opening sequence)

Sunglasses - These are used to indicate to the audience that Blake is maybe covering up his true character and using the sunglasses as a defence. This unsettles the audience as they feel they do not know the character.

Character(s)

Harry - Plays Blake Lewis

I chose harry to play as Blake as his look suits the character of Blake. His haircut represents a cool and collected character which is representative of Blake's character
